project : Studio 17

"This year, 9 artists collaborated in Open Studio. I don't remember exactly why I decided to participate in the collaboration, but I think I needed an excuse to meet other artists in the current situation. We decided to set up a fictional character and work on his/her residency life. It seems that they wanted the life of each residency or the daily life that takes place around the residency to melt into the work through the use of the virtual person as a medium. One of the characteristics I feel as the corona situation is prolonged is that it is difficult to maintain momentum without a specific trigger, and our case was no different. It was around that time that Johannes came to mind while on a walk. Although he exists, his presence, who is not present in this place, seemed to be able to represent our story. On November 6, an e-mail arrived from Johannes. He said that the mail he sent to and from eight writers he knew nothing about made him feel like he was in Goyang. I replied that he imagines inviting us all if he can come to the Goyang Residency next year."

"Today, I want to talk about working on a project that is about to be installed.  After seeing your work, I got the impression that you intuitively recognize and digest a given environment or situation. So, I want to show you Room 17, where you would have stayed if you were in Goyang. Room 17 is a room with two small windows. Through the window, you can see tall trees, small houses, and a vegetable garden. The trees around the Goyang Residency seem to show the four seasons of Korea particularly well."

"My room is room 23. It is located quite close to Room 17. My room has one large glass window.
(The room assignment was decided by random ‘ladder game.’) There is a wall beyond my window.

This is the exterior wall of the Goyang Residency.  It is said that the room is not popular because of the bad view, and it is also called the 'meditation room'. But I liked that wall quite a bit from the start. (tmi)

Work of this project started with a desire to react to the environment of Room 17 ‘like you’. And I got to look at the scenery that I couldn't see in my room for a long time. In addition, the work was embodied by recalling concepts such as ‘translation’, ‘tracing’, ‘reproduction’, ‘error’, and ‘inevitability and chance’. The project exhibition is open tomorrow, and I think I will start the installation from 4-5 pm today.
